Is a Mold Inspector Required to Be Licensed in South Carolina?
Right now, no. South Carolina does not currently require a state license to work as a mold inspector. That surprises a lot of homeowners, since so many other trades in this state are licensed. Because of that, anyone can technically call themselves a mold inspector here, which makes it worth asking who you're actually hiring.
That's changing, though. A bill introduced in the South Carolina House in February 2026 would create a South Carolina Mold Assessment and Remediation Board and require formal certification for anyone doing mold assessment or remediation work in the state. As of now it's still moving through committee, not yet law, but it shows where the industry is heading.
In the meantime, we hold ourselves to the IICRC standard anyway, because it's the right way to do the work, not because a law says we have to. In many states that already require licensing, mold assessors and mold remediators can't be the same company on a single project, to avoid a conflict of interest. We're upfront about our process for the same reason: our inspection findings are based on what we actually see and measure, not on what makes a bigger invoice.
